What I mean is this …
What I mean is this version is the same Band version of the song as 1968 except it is live and the Staples are backing them up in a great way, cords are the same, time is the same. The 68 vers. has Levon Helm doing all the main singing, that’s it.

My grandad worked at Concord Tavern in Toronto when I was a little kid. Rompin’ Ronnie Hawkins had a long-running gig there. I remembering going in with him and watching these guys practice. Sweet memories!

i think aretha’s version influenced this PARTICULAR version. i know who’s tune it is. i didn’t say aretha did it first. the band obviously liked her version and it influenced this particular version. when you say ” get a clue ” are you talking about the board game ?????

  23. undermislengteng Says:

    i just mean adding …
i just mean adding the soul element to the vocals , not a literal adoption of aretha’s version. yes her version is much different from this. but i think it helped color this particular rendition. i think something happened similar with jimis version of all along the watchtower. in interviews bob dylan says he adopted an influenced version based on that. just random observations. thanks for your reply and of course you are right it is all sujective. haha rick danko cracks me up.

  24. copyryan Says:

    Aretha’s version is …
Aretha’s version is great. “Best” is subjective. But I’d have to disagree with you about the arrangement. This sounds nothing like Aretha’s version. The melody and words she sings are different, her version is much more funk-based, she leaves out the fourth verse, and the guitar hooks on her version are played on a lap steel guitar.

This is very much true to The Band’s own concept of the tune. Of course, Mavis and the other Staples Singer add a lot of soul. But it’s still nothing like Aretha.
