If i am overweight, what health checks should i be asking my GP for?

such as blood pressure and diabetes, etc. I’m 26 if that helps.
i’m on the weight watchers diet and have been prescribed orlistat and exercise, i don’t need diet tips thanks.

Hi there.
I am a Sports Science Lecturer and here is my opinion on the matter.

Okay the health checks are of vital importance to those who have larger body mass and highe than average BMI scores.
There are several you should consider, heres the ones i recomend asking your GP about.

Blood Pressure: The only way of knowing if you have high blood pressure is by having it measured. This is a critical test to be carried out, fortunately most GPs will perform this at most consultations.

Cholesterol: A high level is one of many risk factors for coronary heart disease. Once again the only way of finding out if your cholesterol level is in the high risk category is by having it measured. Ask your GP to have this measured and seek advice on how to correct any health issues.

Diabetes Screen: This is an urgent issue that you should have checked out. Preventative strategies, and coping strategies to help combat Diabetes. There are currently over 2.3 million people with this condition in the UK, and up to another 750,000 people with diabetes who are unaware that they have it.

Heart Attack Risk: The doctor will give you his/her personal opinion on the risk of this based on several factors including diet, weight, exericse, hereditory implications to name a few.

Stroke Risk: Once again the doctor will give you his/her personal opinion on the risk of this based on several factors including diet, weight, exericse, hereditory implications to name a few.

Heartscan ECG: By having a heartscan ECG (Electrocardiogram) we are able to screen for a number of wave form abnormalities such as an irregular heartbeat.

Lung Function: RESPIRATORY DISEASE is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in the UK. More people die from respiratory disease than coronary heart disease or cancer, and respiratory illness is the most common reason for emergency hospital admission. Objective diagnosis, monitoring and appropriate management of respiratory disease require measurement of lung function.

Other Risk assesments may include:
Kidney Screen
Liver risk
Stress Assessment
Body Mass Index
Waist Risk Profile
Waist/Hip Ratio
Body Fat Analysis
Basal Metabolic Rate

The website below will delve into these issues in more detail

Hope i was able to help.

How many overweight pregnant women have lost weight without trying?

I want to hear from those of you who have personally experienced this. I am also about 50 pounds overweight from first baby born a year ago and am now 2 months pregnant. No m/s but it seems like weight is slowly coming off. I definitely don’t want to diet, but I just wish for it to be natural like some stories I’ve read and I want to be encouraged by those of you who have been in this particular situation. Wish me luck and thanks in advance for your stories!

I weigh almost 30 lbs less than when I got pregnant. All of it came off unintentionally. I think a combo of m/s for me and eating healthier. Everything with the baby seems to be fine and my doctor isn’t concerned. One of the good things about being pregnant for me so far! Good luck!

Why do people insist on calling girls a bit over weight fat?

I’m 5′3, and 145lbs. Yes I know I’m a bit over weight, and all. If you look at me though I don’t look huge, but some girls are the same weight, and look larger. They all are constantly made fun of.
How can America be so cruel to girls like that; America made us this way, and this is how we stand.
Can’t you people just stop?

People are cruel, in general. It’s just not weight. Some people get a boost from making fun of others. It somehow makes them feel like they’re better. It’s wrong, but it will never stop. As for weight — I know plenty of girls who weigh more than their tiny little friends and are in better physical shape. The number on the scale means nothing. Thanks to the entertainment business, our country ONLY focuses on the number. There’s plenty of people out there that sacrifices their own health to compete with what Hollywood has considered "beautiful." All that says about a person is that they can’t stand on their own two feet, and be a leader and love themselves for who they are. You’re right — you were made that way, so love what God gave ya and block out all the cruel remarks… and if one wants to change, it should ONLY be for themselves, and no one else.

Is obesity and being overweight the same thing?

Reading online, I’ve found that some sites use these words interchangably. Are these two classified as the same? Or are there different risks associated with the two. Is being slightly overweight as bad for your health as being slightly obese?

Overweight is like 10-20 lbs over….obesity is when you have hit that weight limit which heightens your risks of heart disease, high blood pressure etc.

"An adult who has a BMI between 25 and 29.9 is considered overweight.
An adult who has a BMI of 30 or higher is considered obese."

THis is from the Center for Disease Control – their definition of obesity and overweight.

World wide health problems?

for language arts we have to have an idea related to health problems with kids.
for example obesity.
any other thoughts?
thanks :)

Some childhood diseases include:

* Candidiasis ("Thrush")
* Chagas disease
* Chicken pox
* Croup
* Cytomegalovirus (the virus most frequently transmitted before birth)
* Duchenne muscular dystrophy
* Fifth disease
* Measles
* Mumps
* Rheumatic fever
* Rubella
* Whooping cough
* Diabetes
* Cystic Fibrosis
* Influenza
* Leukemia
* Tetanus

Is the New health care plan of Obama a way to reduce obesity by having all Americans starve from poverty?

SHOOT i thought he was supposed to buy my healthcare AND my food!!

What is the skinniest but still healthy weight for a 13 year old thats about 4′11?

I am recovering from an eating disorder and I weigh 78 pounds. My doctors say I need to gain weight but how much more?
What would still make me skinny but healthy?
please no rude comments. thanks
So 85 pounds the least?

Wow, good for you!!!!! I’m glad you’re getting healthy. Well, when I was 13, I was about your height and weight but I was just naturally that thin. So I’d probably say maybe gain 5-10 pounds. Your BMI is about 16 (which is about what mine is now…I;m 3 inches taller and 85 lbs) and I think 18 is the lowest for the healthy range. But if you have trouble gaining that weight and you’re eating properly, then don’t sweat it. And good luck!!! I’m praying for you. xoxo
