What are you trying to argue, that obesity is bad or harmful?
America´s increase in size is due to it´s low population growth rate (0.3% per year due to immigration). This rate is much lower than the rate at much the agricultural industry needs to grow in our economy to be considered successful, so in order to increase at a greater rate, the industry needs each individual to eat more calories and more corn (because we produce much more corn than we need due to government subsidies. This corn often takes the form of high fructose corn syrup, which is extremely unhealthy and the main cause of childhood diabetes.)
In general, it is important to know that while many people argue that being fat is unhealthy, science has shows through many studies that while there is a correlation between fatness and healthfulness there is not actually a causality. Fatness is caused by many factors, some of which include lack of exercise and poor diet, which also cause bad health. Diet and ability to sustain exercise is actually a much better indication of one´s health. Many other genetic and health factors affect weight.
As for the effect on self esteem that often comes from fatness, this is one of many terrible consequences of our cultures overly narrow, unrealistic depiction of beauty. Currently, a huge number of people, especially women, are seeking plastic surgery to change perfectly functional and previously considered beautiful bodies. We need to change our definition of beauty to be more individualized and less unobtainable. In our culture, almost no women feel beautiful.
In the US, fat people face many different forms of discrimination, such as needing to pay more for plane tickets, and being treated like they are invisible. One might argue, that these factors add more stress to the lives of fat people, likely increasing possible issues like depression or anxiety that often are negatively coped with through over eating.
I hope this gives you some arguments
